How to compare digital night vision scopes

If you are thinking about getting a digital night vision scope to do some night hunting you may be wondering how to compare them.  Well there are some factual metrics you can use as a base line.

All digital night vision is built using a digital video camera board that is looking through optics and here is where you start your comparison.  Most vendors don’t tell you the specification of these components but that does not mean you can’t ask.

Digital video camera boards are rated in resolution and light sensitivity.  The resolution is described as the number of television lines of clearity (TVL) and the light sensitivity is rated in LUX.  The smaller the LUX rating the more sensitivity the camera board has to light, the better it can see with low levels of light.

The video camera boards used to build Digital Crosshairs 1000 has a very low LUX rating of .03 LUX.  The video camera board has a resolution of 1000 TVL.  The systems resolution is a combination of the video camera board and the quality of the lens it uses. Digital Crosshairs 1000 uses 3meg large format IR lenses that gather light with high levels of efficiency.

So the first questions you want to ask the manufacturer of a digital night vision scope is:

  1. What is the resolution of the video board camera that they are using?
  2.  What LUX level is the video board camera that they are using?
  3. How many megapix is the lens they are using?
  4. How powerful is the IR illuminator that comes with the scope?

This will not totally define the quality of the system you are evaluating but is comparable to asking a car dealer what kind of motor you get with the car.

All digital night vision systems have a video display.  Digital Crosshairs 1000 uses a large 4.3″ rail attached display that is 320X240 in resolution.  The digital night vision systems that are fabricated to look like a traditional scope with an eye piece to look into use a near-eye display, but it is still a display.  The resolution of a mobile night vision device is limited to reduce the battery drain.  Analog display of a lower resolution than digital displays consume less power so they last longer in the field.   Night vision resolution does not have the same visual perception as day vision.  Digital night vision is traditionally high contrast black and white images.

Clarity is going to be a function of the video camera board, scope optics, and the display.  The clarity at different magnifications and ranges will depend on if the solution is using a digital zoom or physical magnification from the glass optics.  Digital Crosshairs 1000 uses the physical magnification of the glass optics.  The better the optics you attach it to, the clearer your image.  Digital magnification is stretching a limited number of pixels until the image blurs.  Using a scope with an adjustable objective,  Digital Crosshairs 1000 will focus clearly at any magnification level on the scope.

The quality of a digital night vision device is the result of the quality of it’s components.  Lesson here or at least my advice, don’t judge a book by it’s cover.  Technology advances very rapidly so make sure you are not paying for 2016 technology in 2018.  Digital Crosshairs 1000 is built so that the night vision capture board can easily be upgraded as the technology advances.
