Digital Crosshairs 1000 Night Vision Clip-on Review

“Purchased the DC 1000 system for night hog and coyote hunting as well as for night operations for search and rescue (Black River Search and Rescue). The system is awesome – works well and provides a clear picture out to 200 yards! I’m hard on equipment and almost immediately broke the post that supports the video screen. 1 call, and I had a new post for free, AND an upgraded tightening key! Then I lost my battery pack charger. Another call, and 3 days later I had a free replacement!
The equipment works awesome, and Henry Johns’ customer service is extraordinary! I HIGHLY recommend the Digital Crosshair products!”

5 Reasons Why You Should Hunt Wild Pigs

BY STEVE HICKOFF

1. Property Damage Control

Pre-hunt discussions by friends, outfitters, ranch owners and others often conclude with statements such as: “And kill as many pigs as you want.”

Damage control on properties is often one aim. There are four others as well.

Gear tip: Keep an eye on roaming hogs with the Covert Scouting Cameras Night Stryker in Realtree Xtra.

Bonus read: More on damage by wild pigs.

2. Year-Round Hunting Opportunity

Let’s face it, the weeks and months between spring turkey and fall deer seasons are long.

Fishing, as fun as it is, doesn’t always provide the variety you might need. You may want, to put it simply, hunt.

Pigs provide the answer.

Some states, like Alabama, just require a small-game license to target them; others, like Georgia, ask for regular hunting paperwork. In Oklahoma, no license is required to hunt wild pigs on private land.

Often, too, there are no closed seasons on these feral swine; even night hunting and other opportunities.

Always check your state’s regulations though, as they vary. Have fun but stay legal.

The ins and outs of feral hog hunting in Texas

Updated 8:50 am CDT, Wednesday, March 28, 2018

Texas is home to the largest feral hog population in the United States, with an estimated 4 million hogs statewide.

These creatures wreak havoc on the land of hard-working farmers and land owners and disrupt the natural patterns of better and much more beautiful animals.

BIG DADDY: East Texas man takes down 416-pound wild hog in backyard

It’s safe to say that hogs are one of the most-hated animals in Texas along with mosquitoes, fire ants, bed bugs, snakes and rats.

The progeny of domestic hogs that quickly turned feral or hybrids between domestic feral pigs and European wild hogs, feral hogs are omnivores with a nondiscriminatory palate. They will eat anything, which is good news for hunters.

Feral hogs are all over Alabama. How do we get rid of them?

They are four-footed eating, breeding, rooting machines.

Feral hogs are an invasive species present in at least 35 states, according to the United States Department of Agriculture. They cause billions of dollars in crop damage each year, and their rooting causes widespread and lasting environmental damage, according to the USDA.

The porcine population bomb is exploding on farms and ranches, timberlands and suburban yards across the country. Sows become sexually mature at six months, and can drop two litters a year. The average litter size is six to 12 piglets. After reaching about two months old, the piglets have no natural predators. Adult hogs have no natural predators, other than man.

Hogs are omnivores, eating just about anything including plants, small animals and carrion.

Killing Hogzilla: Hunting A Monster Wild Pig

SEPTEMBER 4, 2018 08:33 AM

By Chris Bennett

Michael Mims charged across a turnrow and burst through a green wall of July corn, running toward the baying bedlam of a primal melee. Tangled leaves slapped his face as he pounded down the mocha dirt of a Delta middle, primed to break through an 8-foot curtain of stalks and reach the source of absolute chaos. Twenty-five yards into the field, he checked up and froze in surprise as the flailing body of a black dog catapulted upward from the corn, arced 5 feet above the canopy, and sailed across his sight line before crashing into the foliage. Adrenaline surging, he steeled his nerve, fingered a bowie knife strapped against his thigh, and broke through one last row before spilling onto a flattened pocket 30 yards off the turnrow. Less than 6 feet away stood a hulking leviathan, a 750-lb. wild pig slinging teeth and wearing five dogs. Sliding a 15-inch blade from its sheath, Mims waded into a surreal brawl of blood and dirt—unaware an extraordinary wild pig saga was only just beginning.
